Friday Night Fever
by Stephanie

The soft glow of the large movie screen, barely visible faces peering intently at a rat stirring a pot of boiling water and crunches of popcorn fill the auditorium. On Friday, March 6th, children attended the second Popcorn Movie Party at the Commons. With cozy blankets, pillows, and even a few treasured stuffed friends in hand, they curled themselves in comfortable mounds and enjoyed the feature, Ratatouille. They had just settled in after feasting on hot dogs, fish, or tofu pups and were ready to laugh with their friends, old and new.
Movie night started as a fundraiser to help with field trips and while accomplishing that with the eager support of many parents, it has also become a happy and safe social event for children to get to know each other better. Almost impossible to keep their enthusiasm inside, children arrive in pajamas, set up their sleeping bag area, and excitedly join their friends. As the movie nears its end … and the ice cream sandwiches find their way to tummies … voices ring out with the question, “When is the dance party?”
Jasmine was ready to boogie!
The dance party portion of the evening begins in a near frenzy! Screams of delight as the music bounces off the walls and suddenly the quiet hum of the room becomes a disco flashback as what we affectionately call our “John Travolta Move,” springs up among the first and second grade girls. Warren brought back the 1980’s with his fierce break dancing spins on the floor and Grace's 1960’s spy moves inspired others to expand their own dancing repertoire.
Movie Night … it puts the fun in fundraising!
