Students in the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade class act out a scene in "The Frog That Became Emperor." |
Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade students at The Renaissance School in Shelburne took to the stage recently to present theater pieces they had created as a part of their studies. The Third Grade, who studied Colonial America, wrote letters that they read aloud about their journey on the Mayflower; they improvised scenes about the life of Colonial children, and sang and danced to authentic Colonial songs. They wove all the pieces together to create a piece they entitled Colonial Life: The Making of America.

The Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade studied China, and so tailored their performance in the style of Peking Opera, or JÄ«ngjù. They took an old Chinese tale, The Frog that Became Emperor, and performed it in the Peking Opera style, seeking to emulate the theatrical conventions of Peking Opera in their work. The hallmarks of Peking Opera are music and song, mime, and dance, with intricate and colorful costumes on a sparely decorated stage. The class also composed and performed the overture for the piece themselves, again using a traditional Chinese pentatonic scale and tones.

The different classes work came together in an evening of theater on May 7, at The Renaissance School’s Performing Arts Space at Shelburne Commons. The plays were very well received, and each class received a standing ovation from the audience for their work.
