"Hike for Hunger" Raises over $2500

The Renaissance School Participates in Hike for Hunger 2009

On Tuesday, October 6, The Renaissance School joined forces with colleges, high schools, middle, and elementary schools statewide to participate in the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger’s 13th annual Hike for Hunger event. October is Hike for Hunger month and this year an unprecedented number of schools will be hiking on various days and locations throughout Vermont.

A collective sigh of relief went up from The Renaissance School as blue skies and sun peeked through the clouds over Shelburne.  Students, parents and faculty from The Renaissance School climbed Mt. Philo this year to raise money for the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger’s Cooking for Life nutrition education classes. “The goal of Cooking for Life is to empower parents and youth to make healthy choices,” says Rebecca O’Reilly, Nutrition Education Coordinator of the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. “With increased skills in nutrition and low-cost meal preparation, families can stretch food dollars further and feel good about providing healthy options for their families.  It is one thing we all can do to decrease the risk of hunger for Vermont children and families."

Students from The Renaissance School collected money from friends and family to donate to the cause before they made the walk. At the end of the morning it was evident by all of the happy faces and friendly talk that the school had another successful event. Everyone who hiked or donated to the cause will be able to take pride in their contribution to help make the world a better place.

In addition to fundraising many schools are choosing to incorporate the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger’s Feeding Minds curriculum - targeted elementary and middle school-age lesson plans and activities that educate Vermont youth about the complicated issue of hunger in the state.
