May Day Celebrations at The Renaissance School

On May 17, 2010, The Renaissance School held it's annual May Day celebration in the courtyard of the Farm Barn at Shelburne Farms.
The school collected willow branches for each child and faculty member, which they wove into crowns, along with flowers that each family brought to school. Each class then danced a traditional "May Day" dance around the maypole erected that day in the courtyard.
Families and friends were invited to attend and participate. The oldest class, the fifth and sixth graders, did a special maypole dance in which the ribbons on the pole are woven together and re-tied at the end, to prepare the pole for the May Day the next year.
For many of the students, this was a tradition they had shared since pre-school, as May Day is also celebrated at each of the Heartworks Preschools. It was a wonderful celebration of the arrival of spring!
