Renaissance Students Go to Montreal

Our first stop in Montreal was for lunch at the Lachine Rapids Park where there is a wildlife sanctuary. Children enjoyed climbing on the rocks and spotting geese, red-winged blackbirds, great blue herons, and other birds.

Our visit to the Biosphere brought the children’s studies of water to life as they pumped, splashed, carried, and filled and emptied containers.

Some of the children even tried walking on water!

Children pump water up tubes in a race to see who can get their water to squirt out at the top first!

Imagine our delighted surprise when we discovered the theme of hearts at the Museum of Fine Arts!

Riding the subway was a grand adventure, and we did it successfully four times in one day!

Walking the streets of Old Montreal and riding the subway allowed us to feel a true intimacy with the city. Happening to find Steve’s Music, a store well-known by the musical children in our group, was a wonderful piece of good fortune, and the children were awestruck as they moved from room to room, discovering how large the store was compared to its relatively small storefront.

Nicole’s kindergarten class has a teddy bear named Poinsettia, who accompanied us on our trip. The children enjoyed documenting Poinsettia’s journey in photos and print.

Poinsettia was popular with the people at the Ben and Jerry’s scoop shop where we stopped for ice cream!

Our guide at the Cosmodome, Kirina, made our adventures fun and exciting with her boundless energy and enthusiasm. Here’s our team after a busy morning of learning, challenges, and teamwork.

At the Cosmodome’s Space Camp, children learned about the Constellation mission and received updates about NASA’s space program in a briefing before they set out on their journey to the moon!

Children faced many mission challenges at the Cosmodome. Here they put their teamwork skills to work as they collaborated to construct a bridge that would support as much weight as possible.

In the first mission assignment, each child experienced an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) and learned how to control a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), guiding it to touch a life-size space shuttle, perform a turn, and return to the docking station.

Tilting the MMU was a fun way to feel like we were out in space!

Children take some time out for rest and play after a visit to the Montreal Science Centre, which included the Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology exhibit and the 3-D IMAX movie, Arabia.
