Heartworks Burlington Staff

The teaching faculty at the Heartworks, Renaissance, and Endeavour Schools have earned a certification in early or elementary education and/or have comparable educational training and experience. Throughout the year, teachers and directors participate in professional development programs, both on and off-site, aimed at expanding and improving their teaching skills and enhancing the mission of our Schools. We are dedicated to providing a program based on quality and consistency in all of the schools. All of our faculty and staff are asked to embrace a heartful and peaceful approach with children and to uphold the philosophies of the school.

Kathleen Schaffner

School Director

Kathleen has been part of the Heartworks and Renaissance family since 1999 teaching first at Renaissance, then at Heartworks before becoming the School Director at Heartworks in Burlington.  She attended St. Bonaventure University for her Undergraduate studies in Sociology and Spanish and the University of Vermont for her graduate degree in Education. She has an Elementary Education License in Vermont. In her free time she enjoys long distance running and reading books! Kathleen also spends lots of time with her husband and two children.


Jennifer Mazza


Jen has been working in education for more than twelve years and has been with Heartworks since 2011.  Prior to working at Heartworks she worked for the Milton Town School District teaching children with special needs.  In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, baking and spending time in the outdoors.


Megan Lambros

Assistant Teacher

Megan joined Heartworks in 2015.  She was born and raised in California in a suburb of Los Angeles.  She moved to Vermont in 2009 to attend Champlain College and graduated in 2014 with a dual degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and holds a Professional Educator's License for the State of Vermont as a Highly Qualified Teacher.  When not at school, Megan works as a Stage Manager for Champlain Theatre, as well as some local theatre companies. She ventures out on stage from time to time, but mostly likes working behind the scenes to make the magic happen. 

Caitlin Brouillard


Caitlin is proud and excited to join the Heartworks team. She has worked with children of all ages ranging from infants to high school and carries over ten years of experience. She has 5 years of experience leading a preschool classroom, and has enjoyed facilitating playgroups and other community events through the South Burlington Family Center. She has her Child Development Associate in early childhood, as well as many college courses focusing on education. She is a busy mom of two, an 8 year old son and 5 year old daughter. She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading and traveling with her family.


Molly Watson

Assistant Teacher

Molly graduated from Milton High School and is currently taking courses at the Community College of Vermont in Early Childhood Education.  Before joining Heartworks in 2016, she worked with three to five year olds.  Outside of work, Molly is a member of a local billiards league, enjoys outdoor activities and loves spending time with family and friends.  





Susan Robinson


Susan graduated from Champlain College and also received her Child Development Associate in early childhood.  She has been teaching at Heartworks since 2004. She enjoys spending time with her family.  She loves to cook, spend time outside and enjoys adventures with her husband, son and daughter.


Clara Utz


Clara graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education.  She has worked in both early childhood and elementary education classrooms and holds a Vermont Teacher's license.  Clara likes to hike, horseback ride, swim, read, and spend time with her family. She is also an accomplished violinist and is learning to play the guitar.



Loraleh Harris


Loraleh very excitedly joined the Heartworks team in 2017.  Loraleh has worked in numerous capacities with children.  She worked as a Coordinator and Teacher for a literacy and art based school for preschool aged children.  She was an art teacher for numerous years, as well as, a children’s librarian and she has enjoyed the challenge of being a self employed artist for many years.  She has a BA in Fine Arts.  Outside of work, Loraleh enjoys long tromps with her dog, Tess, no matter the weather!


Leah Mulvey


Leah has worked for The Heartworks and Renaissance Schools since 2003 as a school director and a teacher.  Leah graduated from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology.  She has completed coursework in Early Childhood Education from the Community College of Vermont and has taken graduate classes in Education from Southern New Hampshire University.  Prior to joining Heartworks in 2003 Leah taught pre-school for five years in Burlington and Atlanta, Georgia.  Leah lives in Burlington with her husband and her son. Leah enjoys reading, walking, cooking and spending time with her family.



Dominique Sprouse


Dominique joined the Heartworks family in December of 2014.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Education and Recreation Management and a Masters in Elementary Education with the status of a Highly Qualified Teacher with her teaching licenses in Vermont, North Carolina and New Jersey.  Besides her passion for teaching and working with children, Dominique is a musician, singer/songwriter, as well as a Yoga Alliance Certified RYT220 Hatha Vinyasa and Children’s Yoga Teacher, who enjoys incorporating music and yoga into the classroom.

Before joining the Heartworks family, Dominique taught preschool in a three/four year old classroom, Pre-Kindergarten in North Carolina, substitute taught grades K-6 for a public charter one-room school house in North Carolina, taught yoga and was a wilderness therapy field guide working with troubled youth and adolescents.  Dominique enjoys being outdoors and all that                                                                    beautiful Vermont has to offer.  She enjoys hiking, running, skiing and spending time with her                                                                    family and dog. 



Kelly Kennedy

Support Teacher

Kelly graduated in 1995 from The University of Vermont with a BS in Early Childhood Education. Her education included an in-depth study of the exceptional early childhood schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy.  She has over 15 years of experience teaching toddler and preschool aged children in Vermont, Ohio, and New York City.  Kelly's areas of interest in the classroom include designing beautiful child-centered spaces and activities, exploration and learning through music and body movement, and the fostering of self-esteem, social skills, and a love of learning.  When Kelly is not teaching she enjoys biking, gardening, reading, dancing, attending live music shows, and traveling.



Jayne Methot-Walker

Support Teacher

Jayne has a degree in Art Education and a B.S. from UVM in Animal Science.  She has worked as a certified Art Educator in Vermont for over twenty years.  She lives in Grand Isle with her retired husband.  They are both active members of Lyric Theatre in Burlington, and have two daughters.  One is a senior at UVM and the oldest lives in Portland, Oregon.  Jayne’s current hobby is learning the techniques of stand up comedy.


Heather Benton

STEAM and Substitute Teacher

Heather joined the Heartworks family in 2012.  She is licensed by the State of Vermont in Early Education, and is certified to teach through the third grade level.  A native Vermonter, she attended the University of Vermont and earned a B.A. in psychology.  Heather resides in Essex Junction and enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, crafting and serving as a Deacon in her church.

Joanna May

Music Teacher

Joanna has been singing and making music for most of her 47 years as a performer and teacher, and for hospice clients in our community as a singer/director with the VNA's Noyana Singers. 

Joanna studied voice at Indiana University and received a Vermont teaching license and Master's degree in Integrating the Arts into Education from St. Michael's College. She's a certified Music Together teacher and center director. Her most recent musical endeavor was a week-long workshop learning to lead Bobby McFerrin-inspired Circle Songs. She joined Heartworks in 2015.

Joanna is the mom of 2 music-loving boys (ages 11 & 13).  Joanna's best musical influences were her parents, whose love of music made for a lot of singing in the car!
