Budding Scientists in our Woodlands

Caryn Shield, a sixth grade teacher at Endeavour Middle School in Shelburne, brought eight of her students to Shelburne Farms to help Dana Bishop, the Natural Resources & Assistant Woodlands Manager at Shelburne Farms, conduct plot surveys to measure the growth of certain tree species. Using forestry tools such as prisms and Biltmore sticks, the students measured the growth of trees in control plots versus plots that had been harvested to encourage the growth of more sugar maples, and the students’ data will be submitted to the farm as part of their study.
