In April we began composting in our school! Green Mountain Compost has been so generous and helpful as we set up this new program. We had a school-wide assembly to define and discuss the value of composting. The children have learned to put their food scraps into the classroom compost bucket so the scraps will eventually be transformed into rich soil which will be used to grow more food. They have been thrilled to partake in this process. It has been quite a learning experience to distinguish between trash, recycling and composting. At lunchtime we have taught the children to compost only scraps that we cannot save to eat later. We have some enthusiastic composters who are now very excited about cleaning up after snack and lunch.
