Heartworks Burlington Staff

The teaching faculty at the Heartworks, Renaissance, and Endeavour Schools have earned a certification in early or elementary education and/or have comparable educational training and experience. Throughout the year, teachers and directors participate in professional development programs, both on and off-site, aimed at expanding and improving their teaching skills and enhancing the mission of our Schools. We are dedicated to providing a program based on quality and consistency in all of the schools. All of our faculty and staff are asked to embrace a heartful and peaceful approach with children and to uphold the philosophies of the school.

Desiree Currier

School Director
Desiree holds a Bachelor in Science degree from Champlain College in Early Childhood Education, and has been working in the field for more than 25 years.  She did her original internship while in College at Heartworks Shelburne and fell in love with the Heartworks philosophy.  She taught Pre-kindergarten in Heartworks Burlington for two years and taught two year old children in Heartworks Williston for five years.  Desiree also had her own early childhood program for four years.  In addition, she has experience working and teaching children six weeks old through eight year olds.  Desiree has been a School Director for two years including as our first Director in Loveworks Montpelier to help get that established and one year as the School Director in Heartworks Stowe. In her spare time Desiree enjoys being outside taking nature walks with her dog, spending time with her family going to swimming holes and finding treasures to restore at garage sales.   


Jennifer Mazza

Teacher and Assistant School Director
Jen has been working in education for more than twelve years and has been with Heartworks since 2011. Prior to working at Heartworks she worked for the Milton Town School District teaching children with special needs. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, baking and spending time in the outdoors.

Chelsea Wolf

Assistant Teacher
Chelsea earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Champlain College. She has steadily worked as a teacher since graduation, with experience in teaching both preschool and pre-kindergarten classrooms. Chelsea is thrilled to be joining the Heartworks team in 2018 and is dedicated to providing excellent and developmentally appropriate care. In her free time, Chelsea likes to cook, craft, and be with with her kitty.

Susan Robinson

Teacher
Susan graduated from Champlain College and also received her Child Development Associate in early childhood. She has been teaching at Heartworks since 2004. She enjoys spending time with her family. She loves to cook, spend time outside and enjoys adventures with her husband, son and daughter.

Gabrielle Ausmann

Teacher
Gabrielle joined Heartworks in the spring of 2018. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. While in College she spent time in multiple schools and has experience working with children from Pre-kindergarten through Eighth Grade. She was born and raised in Vermont. In her free time Gabrielle enjoys spending time with her toddler age nephew, being outside and relaxing with friends and family.

Tori Gulusha

Teacher
Tori has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Salem State University, and holds a Teaching License in Vermont and Massachusetts. She joined Heartworks in 2017. Tori grew up in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and is very excited to live in Vermont. She has a strong passion for early childhood education and has worked in a variety of classrooms, ranging from infancy through Second Grade. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, dancing, and reading.


Leah Mulvey

Teacher
Leah has worked for Heartworks and Renaissance Schools since 2003 as a School Director and a teacher. Leah graduated from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. She has completed coursework in Early Childhood Education from the Community College of Vermont and has taken graduate classes in Education from Southern New Hampshire University. Prior to joining Heartworks in 2003 Leah taught pre-school for five years in Burlington and Atlanta, Georgia. Leah lives in Burlington. Leah enjoys reading, walking, cooking and spending time with her family.


Dominique Sprouse

Teacher
Dominique joined the Heartworks family in December of 2014. She has a Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Education and Recreation Management and a Masters in Elementary Education with the status of a Highly Qualified Teacher with her teaching licenses in Vermont, North Carolina and New Jersey. Besides her passion for teaching and working with children, Dominique is a musician, singer/songwriter, as well as a Yoga Alliance Certified RYT220 Hatha Vinyasa and Children’s Yoga Teacher, who enjoys incorporating music and yoga into the classroom.

Before joining the Heartworks family, Dominique taught preschool in a three/four year old classroom, Pre-Kindergarten in North Carolina, substitute taught grades K-6 for a public charter one-room school house in North Carolina, taught yoga and was a wilderness therapy field guide working with troubled youth and adolescents. Dominique enjoys being outdoors and all that beautiful Vermont. She enjoys hiking, running, skiing and spending time with her family and dog.

Joanna May

Music Teacher
Joanna has been singing and making music for most of her 47 years as a performer and teacher, and for hospice clients in our community as a singer/director with the VNA's Noyana Singers. 

Joanna studied voice at Indiana University and received a Vermont teaching license and Master's degree in Integrating the Arts into Education from St. Michael's College. She's a certified Music Together teacher and center director. Her most recent musical endeavor was a week-long workshop learning to lead Bobby McFerrin-inspired Circle Songs. She joined Heartworks in 2015.

Joanna is the mom of 2 music-loving boys (ages 11 & 13).  Joanna's best musical influences were her parents, whose love of music made for a lot of singing in the car!

Jayne Methot-Walker

STEAM Art Teacher
Jayne has a degree in Art Education and a B.S. from UVM in Animal Science. She has worked as a certified Art Educator in Vermont for over twenty years. She lives in Grand Isle with her retired husband. They are both active members of Lyric Theatre in Burlington, and have two daughters. One is a senior at UVM and the oldest lives in Portland, Oregon. Jayne’s current hobby is learning the techniques of stand up comedy.


Heather Benton

Coordinator of Professional Development, STEAM and Substitute Teacher
Heather joined the Heartworks family in 2012. She is licensed by the State of Vermont in Early Education, and is certified to teach through the third grade level. A native Vermonter, she attended the University of Vermont and earned a B.A. in psychology. Heather resides in Essex Junction and enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, crafting and serving as a Deacon in her church.
