Heartworks Shelburne Staff, Building B

The teaching faculty at the Heartworks, Renaissance, and Endeavour Schools have earned a certification in early or elementary education and/or have comparable educational training and experience. Throughout the year, teachers and directors participate in professional development programs, both on and off-site, aimed at expanding and improving their teaching skills and enhancing the mission of our Schools. We are dedicated to providing a program based on quality and consistency in all of the schools. All of our faculty and staff are asked to embrace a heartful and peaceful approach with children and to uphold the philosophies of the school.

Ashley McKinley

School Director
Ashley has been a part of Heartworks community since 2007. Prior to being named Director at Heartworks Shelburne she taught the four-year old class at Heartworks Burlington and served as a mentor teacher. Before moving to Vermont and joining the Heartworks community she taught at Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, CT where she was born and raised. At Greenwich Country Day she coached middle and upper school field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse and taught Pre-Kindergarten. Ashley graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY with a Bachelor in Arts. She earned a CDA in 2008 and Step 1 of her Director's Credential in 2016, and in 2017 she earned her Vermont Early Childhood and Afterschool Program Director Credential Step 2. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking, traveling and spending time with her husband and daughters. 


Kelly Toher

Kelly graduated from Cazenovia College with a Bachelor of Science in Inclusive Early Childhood Education. Prior to joining Heartworks in 2017, Kelly taught preschool for five years.  In her spare time she enjoys riding her horse and exploring the outdoors. 

Sherri Bird

Assistant Teacher
Sherri has been a teacher at Heartworks since 1991. Prior to Sherri joining us, Heartworks offered classes for three years an older. Sherri approached the founders about trying a two year old class, which was very well received and we've had ever since. She is a certified nurses aid and also has a vocational day care certificate. Sherri loves the children and all the new adventures that they bring. Sherri lives in Hinesburg and has two grown daughters, both of whom are Heartworks alumni.

Kaylah Sharpe

Prior to joining Heartworks in 2016, Kaylah graduated from Stonehill College in Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Education and Visual Performing Arts. Kaylah holds a Teaching License in both Vermont and Massachusetts. In her free time she enjoys playing with her dog, crafting, spending time outdoors, and traveling.

Kaylie Flint

Kaylie grew up in Chittenden County and has lived in Vermont her entire life. She graduated from Johnson State College with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She has had various roles in the past three years in a variety of school settings including alternative and public schools working with all ages of student. In her spare time Kaylie enjoys camping, playing with her dog, Birkenstock, DIY projects and being outside.


Hannah Davis

Hannah has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Southern New Hampshire University. She has a number of years of experience in teaching two year olds through ten year olds in a variety of schools in Vermont and New Hampshire. Teaching is both a passion and a career for Hannah; she enjoys teaching so much it feels like a hobby. In her spare time Hannah enjoys making handmade jewelry, running, being outdoors, and spending time with her family, friends and kitten.


Liz Sweeney

Before starting at Heartworks in 2016, Liz had been working with children since 1997, serving as a teacher, a sports coach, an after school coordinator and a mentor.  She graduated from SUNY Cortland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and earned her Master's Degree in Literacy.

Liz moved to Burlington two years ago and loves exploring Vermont. In her free time she enjoys running, hiking, biking and traveling.


Becca Baker

Becca joined the Heartworks community in 2017 and has been involved in education since 1999 teaching in both private and public schools. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a major in Romance Languages, and earned her MATESOL from St. Michael's College. Becca holds a K-12 ELL Vermont license with the status of Highly Qualified Teacher, participated in a selective grant focusing on interdisciplinary teaching, and is pursuing an additional endorsement in Special Education through an M.Ed. From Champlain College. Becca has lived in Canada and Scotland, and has traveled to China, Greece, Mexico, and throughout most of Europe. She loves to cook, read, and spend time outdoors no matter the season with her husband and three children.

Hunter Lockyer-Wills

Hunter graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelors in Early Education and holds a Vermont's Teacher's License. Before joining Heartworks in 2015, she worked in several different aged classrooms ranging from Infants to First Grade. Hunter enjoys reading, cooking, gardening and spending time with her friends and family. 

Joanna May

Music Teacher
Joanna has been singing and making music for most of her 47 years as a performer and teacher, and for hospice clients in our community as a singer/director with the VNA's Noyana Singers. 

Joanna studied voice at Indiana University and received a Vermont teaching license and Master's degree in Integrating the Arts into Education from St. Michael's College. She's a certified Music Together teacher and center director. Her most recent musical endeavor was a week-long workshop learning to lead Bobby McFerrin-inspired Circle Songs. She joined Heartworks in 2015.

Joanna is the mom of 2 music-loving boys (ages 11 & 13).  Joanna's best musical influences were her parents, whose love of music made for a lot of singing in the car!

Jayne Methot-Walker

Support and STEAM Art Teacher
Jayne has a degree in Art Education and a B.S. from UVM in Animal Science.  She has worked as a certified Art Educator in Vermont for over twenty years.  She lives in Grand Isle with her retired husband.  They are both active members of Lyric Theatre in Burlington, and have two daughters.  One is a senior at UVM and the oldest lives in Portland, Oregon.  Jayne’s current hobby is learning the techniques of stand up comedy.



Heather Benton

Coordinator of Professional Development, STEAM and Substitute Teacher
Heather joined the Heartworks family in 2012. She is licensed by the State of Vermont in Early Education, and is certified to teach through the third grade level. A native Vermonter, she attended the University of Vermont and earned a B.A. in psychology. Heather resides in Essex Junction and enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, crafting and serving as a Deacon in her church.
